Sponsor - Promise of Commitment

As an OCIA sponsor, you extend the Catholic community’s welcome and support. A sponsor should meet regularly with the participant, share the faith in an open, honest, caring and encouraging way, and pray for and with the participant before, during and after initiation.

By making the commitment below, I affirm:
• I am a Catholic who lives out my faith.
• I attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.
• I am at least 16 years old.
• I have received Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation.
• If married, I was married in the Catholic Church.
• I understand the responsibility before God and the Church of becoming this participant’s sponsor.
• I will encourage and support the participant in practicing the Catholic faith by word and example.
• I will participate in activities required by St. John Vianney Parish to help prepare the participant for Confirmation.

Required supporting documents
If not married, submit your Confirmation certificate. If married, submit your marriage certificate. Your priest, deacon or designated minister must give written consent, sign and date the parish certification, and affix the parish seal. Contact the OCIA coordinator about submitting these documents. Online submission does not replace the signed parish certification.

Walking Together: Sponsor Questionnaire

Christian accompaniment begins not with a perfect sponsor, but with a willing person who is prepared to walk faithfully alongside another. This brief questionnaire helps the OCIA team make thoughtful matches that can foster friendship, spiritual companionship, and a lasting sense of belonging in parish life.

There are no right or wrong answers. Please answer according to what is natural and realistically sustainable for you, rather than what you think an ideal sponsor should be. Your responses will help inform our pastoral discernment as we seek a fitting and fruitful match.
